San Simeon, on California’s central coast, captures that “town that time forgot” feel. The town is full of historical treasures, from luxurious and beautiful Hearst Castle to Sebastian’s General Store – any local will tell you you must have lunch there while you’re visiting. San Simeon is also home to gorgeous beaches, complete with picnic sites, BBQ grills, and kayak/boogie board rentals.
Come in the winter and watch the crowd of elephant seals that lounge near the Piedras Blancas lighthouse. Local shops, crafts, and cuisine make exploring the town like a treasure hunt. Take a drive north or south on the scenic Big Sur Highway (Highway 1) to explore the beautiful scenery and nearby towns, all equally charming. Take some time to check out the unique Jade Cove (where the gem makes up the beach) and Moonstone Beach, home to tidepools full of sea life. – Allison Barton
